An Alchemical Full Moon: Turning Lead into Gold

For reasons that will become clear as you read this article, it’s shorter than usual. Don’t let that fool you – it’s not due to a shortage of important aspects to write about. Quite the converse. We are in a peak period of intense astrology, which means one thing – change, ready or not. Are you feeling it?

First off, we have a very powerful and intense (no hyperbole) Aquarius Full Moon, on Wednesday 29^th July at 15:35 BST, which I will explain in more detail, but first, let’s set the scene.

Grumbling along in the background leading up to this lunation, Mars in Gemini squares Venus in virgo bringing fraught relational and emotional dynamics to the surface for airing - its gathering heft from this weekend. Meanwhile, Saturn newly stationary retrograde in Aries is highlighting the need for us to review boundaries, limits and structures. Thankfully Mercury in Cancer is newly out of his retrograde, and will be out of shadow by 7^th August, so forward movement is possible. Then the Full Moon which lights up and triggers the basket configuration of the outer planets we looked at last month, illuminating where and what in our life needs our conscious attention and change.

In alchemy, a crucible is the vessel, the sacred container that holds the transformational material to be turned from lead into gold. This Full Moon is the crucible.

The grinding, non-stop barely perceptible wearing down of one’s very soul; everyone seems to be feeling it at some level - or is that just me projecting onto the rest of humanity? Either way, it took some effort to even consider sitting down and writing this, the exhaustion now palpable. What I know is that something’s got to give. This Full Moon, the most powerful this year, feels like the moment it finally does.

The alchemical lead here is the root cause of that exhaustion you’re feeling; the grinding down weariness of holding on to a life that no longer fits, that no longer serves, that feels devoid of meaning. A heavy metal layer that cannot shine. The irony is, it is this same heavy base material which is necessary to produce our personal gold, it cannot be produced from anything lighter, anything else is simply fools’ gold.

The Full Moon in Saturn ruled Aquarius - associated with the collective, freedom and innovation - is conjunct Pluto, the powerful planet of soul deep intense transformation; an energy that’s stacking due to his sextile with dissolving Neptune in Aries and trine to Uranus, the revolutionary great awakener in Gemini.

Less than two hours before the full moon perfects, the Sun, our individual vital life force, and expansive Jupiter, meet in Leo, heralding a new cycle for our great benefic. Jupiter is being burnt up in the heart of the Sun, consumed by the solar flames so that he may arise anew, like the mythological phoenix, from his combustion. At the same time both the Sun and Jupiter oppose the non-negotiable power of Pluto, forming a crucible of intense transformational energy across the Leo - Aquarius axis.

We are all feeling the alchemical fire; the basket seemingly aflame surrounds us. On some days I welcome the relief, ready to be transmuted within the flames. On others, old fear or conditioning has me gripping tightly to the familiar, however heavy it’s become. If that’s you too, be gentle with yourself - the crucible does its work either way.
